Mauna Loa

Mauna loa is the largest volcano in Hawaii at 4,170 meters above sea level. It is conical and rises from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 6,000 meters.

On October 30, 2012, NASA announced that curiosity's first analysis of soil samples from Mars showed that parts of the Martian soil were similar to the soil on the side of Mauna Kea, Hawaii.

It is the first time that curiosity has used its own chemical and mineral instruments to conduct mineralogical identification of soil samples taken from Mars' gale crater since its successful landing on Aug. 6, 2012.

This is also the first time that X-ray diffraction techniques have been used to analyze the soil of extrasolar objects.

The soil samples came from a "rock nest" of dust and gravel, sifting through more than 150 microns of sand, leaving only two components, dust and the more mars-like fine sand, scattered throughout the planet.

It is more than 10,000 meters from the bottom of the sea to the top of the mountain, and is more than 1,000 meters higher than Mount Everest. Meter.

This is the first time that Curiosity has used its own chemical mineral instrument to carry out mineralogy identification of the ingested soil samples since the successful landing on the Martian Gael crater on August 6, 2012.

This is also the first time that X-ray diffraction technology has been used to analyze soils outside the Earth.

The soil sample comes from a pile of dust and gravel called “Rock Nest”. After filtering out more than 150 microns of sand, only the dust that is scattered throughout the planet and the fine sand with more Mars characteristics are left.
