第十名现象
1986年9月，丁磊考入奉中学习，成为当时高一(2)班56位同学中的一份子。江鸿跟他是同班同学。
在江鸿老师的记忆里，10多年前的丁磊学业平平，入学时在班内的排名只有四、五十位，跟当下“首富”名号很不对称。“可喜的是，每次考试，他的排名总有进步。不过最好也只在第十至二十位之间，从来没有杀进班级前十名，更别提在年级内的排名了。”
3年后的高考，丁磊交出的成绩同样貌不惊人：他以高出重点分数线1分的成绩有幸被成都电子科技大学录取。只不过，这是丁磊喜欢的大学，他很早就被西部这所藏着大量电子类书籍的高等学府迷住了。
“教育界现在正热衷探讨‘第十名现象’，说的是，在一个班级里，学习成绩排在第十位上下的那几个，有望成为日后最出人头地的一个。我现在想想，丁磊这个个例也是符合‘第十名现象’的。”江鸿老师这么评价他的老同学。
技术偏执狂
当然，学业平平的丁磊也有锋芒显露之处，他在中学时代的行为癖好就强烈地表现出技术“偏执狂”的特征。
丁磊从小就喜欢无线电。初一时，他第一次成功组装了一台六管收音机，那在当时是一种最复杂的收音机，能接收中波、短波和调频广播。此时的丁磊认为自己将来最骄傲的职业，就是成为一个电子或者电气工程师。
江鸿回忆：“他很爱动手，每次到他家里去玩，总看到他在拆这个闹钟，解那个收音机。他的父亲是当时国营奉化食品厂的技术副厂长，可能是遗传的因素，他从小对技术充满了兴趣，总喜欢一个人静静地钻研。”
所幸的是，当时的奉化中学已经是浙江省内一所着名的重点高中，有一定实力让学生接触到先进技术。那时候，奉中有几台苹果机，学校借此成立了一个电脑兴趣小组，丁磊想都没想就跑去参加了。这可能是他第一次触摸计算机，至于有没有因此种下对计算机技术的迷恋情结，我们不得而知。
不善交际
小时候的丁磊，不仅学业一般，朋友圈子也不广，而且大都只是泛泛之交，江鸿说他甚至没有一个铁哥们。因为江的父亲也是食品厂员工，有父辈是同事这层关系，他俩才走得比较近，他比其他同学更有机会了解丁磊。
“中学时的班级常常会随个性、兴趣的相投形成几个小团体。农村来的学生因为住校自然有自己的圈子，市区的同学通常表现得活跃些，经常会在一起打打球。但丁磊基本上不参与我们的活动，他在班内也不任一官半职，对体育也不热衷，交际不是他的特长。”
可能是因为对技术用情太专了，以致在人际交往中，丁磊给人的感觉总是捉襟见肘。不仅在做企业时，丁磊要退居幕后，架构技术，中学时代的丁磊同样喜欢一个人钻在自己的兴趣中。
然而，丁磊是平和的，江鸿印象中的他很容易相处，同学有忙请他帮，他也很热心。98年的时候，有个老同学南下求职，已在广州开始事业的丁磊帮着同学联系工作，安排住宿，俨然一幅好事者心肠，丝毫不把同学当外人看。
对母校许下心愿
2001年9月，奉化中学迎来了百年校庆。母校给丁磊发了请帖。不巧的很，此时的丁磊俗务缠身，被股价狂跌和财务问题烤得焦头滥额，苦于分身无术，当然他也没心情参观占地250亩的奉中新校园。
一年多后的同学会上，一不小心成了首富的丁磊表达了对母校的感情，表示将在3-5年内，在奉化中学设立一项奖学金，用于鼓励有创新思维和创新精神的学生。
但是，1971年出生的丁磊清楚自己毕竟太年轻了，有很多事情要做;而且互联网的变数太大，网易和自己远没有到可以盖棺论定的时候，一贯稳健务实的“丁首富”不想让自己被浮华和作秀笼罩了。
把财富高高挂在纳斯达克交易墙上的丁磊坦言对钱早有一种宠辱不惊的淡定;其实，他对友情、对乡情，何尝不怀着一种“君子之交淡于水”的胸襟!
