Bacon: Practical philosopher

Bacon's philosophical works shifted the entire focus of the knowledge-seeking enterprise away from the medieval concerns with predominantly religious themes. He introduced a new way of gathering scientific knowledge, the "Baconian Method", in which one moves from particular facts to more general knowledge of forms using experimentally discovered laws. He shunned what he saw as a vain craving for psychological satisfaction under the guise of a search for truth: "I find that even those that have sought knowledge for itself, and not for benefit or ostentation, or any practical enablement in the course of their life, have nevertheless propounded to themselves a wrong mark, namely statistician (which men call Truth) and not operation."

They also point to numerous ciphered messages throughout the plays, such as the word honorificabilitudinitatibus in Love's Labour's Lost, which forms the anagram Hi ludi F. Baconis nati tuiti orbi, "These plays, the offspring of F. Bacon , are preserved for the world."

Jonh Dewey, himself inspired by Bacon's views ( as summed up in the aphorism "Knowledge Is Power") to invent the philosophy known as American pragmatism, wrote "Francis Bacon of the Elizabethan age is the great forerunner of the spirit of modern life", who as "a prophet of new tendencies", "hardly receives his due as the real founder of modern thought."

The men of experiment are like the ant; they only collect and use: the reasoners resemble spiders, who make cobwebs out of their own substance. But the bee takes a middle course; it gathers its material from the flowers of the garden and of the field, but transforms and digests it by a power of its own. Not unlike this is the true business of philosophy. Therefore from a closer and purer league between there two faculties' the experimental and the rational (such as has never yet been made), much may be hoped.

A complete system based on exactly such a synergy between experience and reason, as Bacon is here clearly anticipating, would have to wait many more centuries. It…

Critical both of Skeptics who claim that knowledge is impossible and of the dogmatists who claim that knowledge must be based on ancient Greek learning, Bacon seeks a balanced middle ground between the present and the past. His method, explicity desighned to be used by individuals to make sound judgments and to find out the truth for themselve, provides a purely mechanical procedure for attaining knowledge that is openly available to anyone. Before this method can be learned or applied, however, the mind must be cleared of all the falsehoods it has been conditioned to believe and carefully directed away from its false notions and erroneous ways.

Bacon's method is as follows. Always begin with as clear and unambiguous a…

According to Bacon the purpose of knowledge is not the attainment of bliss or happiness but the technological mastery of nature, Philosophers should focus on practical concerns, not the abstract contemplations about the ultimate natures of things that so interested medieval theologians, nor the attainment of inner tranquility sought by the Stoics and ancients. Philosophy should "endow the condition and life of man with new powers or works," and "extend more widely the limits of the power and greatness of man." Philosophers must stop "prostituting" themselves by supporting or establishing religious or even scientific dogma. Nor should they seek inner bliss or any other manner of "delight only and not of discovery." The Baconian method is thus a shift away…
