Descartes: Father of modern philosophy

Scholasticism was already drawing to a close after centuries of church-dominated Aristotelianism. The challenge of the Copernican revolution, compounded by the Protestant Reformation begun by Martin Luther, had set the stage for the revival of Skepticism fueled still further by the republication, between 1562 and 1569, of all of Empiricist's writings. By the close of the sixteenth century the Catholic "Counter-reformation" was in full swing, and Catholic theologians began using the newly rediscovered Skepticism against Protestants, Calvinists, and Lutheran opponents, arguing that they could not use reason to come to know what they professed to know. Indeed, as we saw, the work of Copernicus and even Galileo was, at least initially, part of their method of demonstration. Thus, ironically, during Descartes's school years Skepticism had aligned itself with religion in the exact way it once had opposed it, creating a climate in which it was generally believed that no certainty could be found in the teachings of science and philosophy and that even the methods of mathematics were not infallible. Such ideas are often attributed to Descartes, but they were already "in the air" during his upbringing and hs own teachers taught Skepticism.

In 1629, having in his own words grown disillusioned with "the book of the world", Descartes fled to Holland where he could continue developing his iconoclastic philosophy in Solitude. He began writing Le Monde(The World), which he divided into two parts, Light and Man. The standard historical rumor has it that upon hearing about the condemnation of Galileo in 1632, Descartes feared a similar fate from the still powerful church and that is why he suspended publication. In fact, it wasn't until twenty two years after Descartes's death that the Roman Catholic Church put the work on the Index Librorum Prohibiorum, the dreaded list of books dangerous to read begun by Pope Pious V back in 1571 and approved by…

In the Discourse, how one night, while returning from the emperor's coronation to his military post in Germany: the winter held me up in quarters in which I found no conversation to interest me; and since, fortunately, I was not troubled by any cares or passions, I spent the whole day shut up alone in a stove-heated room, and was at full liberty to discourse with myself about my own thoughts. These, "my own thoughts," became the basis for the revolutionary ruminations expressed in his Meditations on First Philosophy.

And so Descartes, after more than two millennia of learning, knowledge, and wisdom since the time of Socrates, seems to be essentially reviving the activity of philosophy as it was actually practiced by Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. It is, after all, important and eye-opening to remember that the founders of philosophy were not men of letters. Thus, he writes that after spending some years thus in the study of the book of the world, and in trying to gain experience, there came a day when I resolved to make my studies within myself, and use all my powers of mind to choose the paths I must follow. This undertaking, I think, succeeded much better than it would have if I…

To say that he found the "book of the world" as full of uncertainty as books made of letters would be an understatement. What was generally meant by the phrase is, literally, the study of letters? These little inkblots on the page that you yourself are right now studying. Only I ,Descartes, could study Descartes. You must study yourself. What you are studying, directly, is not me nor my thoughts but little letters on a page that are supposed to represent me and my thoughts. Do such concepts consist of letters? Do people? Stare at your reflection in the bathroom mirror? Actually, that's quite close to what Descartes ended up doing for the purpose of discovering some ultimate truth o…
