Plato: Epistemology and speculative philosophy

Among his many achievements, he founded what would become the avatar of today's university, the Academy, a center for the advancement of wisdom and a training ground for philosophers that lasted nearly a thousand years. Under Plato's direction, the academy also spawned a slew of scientific and mathematical unnovations, linking fifth-century B.C. Pythagorean mathematics with Egyptian geometry and Alexandrian arithmetic.

The Euthyphro, which takes place shortly before Socrates' infamous trial and subsequent execution in 399 B.C.. Plato presents Euthyphro as a wise religious prophet, so highly pious that he has come to court to prosecute his own father, a rich landowner, for causing the death of a slave who had murdered another slave in some brawl. Euthyphro's father bound the murderer and left him in a ditch while he went to fetch the authorities, during which time the slave died. If we are to take Socrates' words here at face value, he is so impressed by the lengths to which Euthyphro has gone in the name of moral justice that he says he wants to become Euthyphro's "disciple" and learn from him the true meaning of piety so that he can better defend himself against the charge of impiety.
