2002年的冬天，李健住在北京的一个寒冷四合院里，看了很多电影和很多书。当他看茨威格的《一个陌生女人的来信》时，给他留下很深的印象，他觉得那个女人在那个时代、在那个男主角的生活中就是一个传奇。于是李健开始着手写下这段旋律。
茨威格把陌生女人描述成一个不断要求对方认出自己的单恋者。她不求物质上的回报，不求肉体上的贪欲，她只是对他的存在感兴趣，就像她只对自己的存在念念不忘一样。可见，陌生女人始终承认他者的地位，她的自我恰恰需要通过他者才能给予定义，她的悲剧并不是自我无法同化他者为自我，而是自我无法与他者联系在一起，又能同时保持自我和他者的独立性。所以，她的死亡并不是自我的胜利，恰恰是面对命运的无奈和自我救赎的失败。通过死亡，她对自我的自足性与他者共存的纠结的确认同时满足了，这是她要的失败，死亡意味着自我毁灭——让存在的变成不存在的——所以自我的存在，与他者的共在，在死亡面前，都变成了无意义，死亡给了她最后救赎的同时，也给了她最后的失败。因此，她的精神危机并没有通过她的死亡来得到解决，而恰恰是通过她的死亡变得分外鲜明了。
