Tang dynasty: du fu


The wind is high in the sky ape roar ai, zhu clear sand white bird fly back.

The boundless forest sheds its leaves shower by shower. The endless river rolls its waves hour after hour.

Thousands of sad autumn often visitors, more than a hundred years of illness alone stage.

Hard and bitter hate numerous frost temples, down and out new stop wine cup.


The translation

The wind was strong and the sky was high and the apes were crowing. It was very sad.

Endless trees rustle down the leaves, the endless Yangtze river water rolling down.

Sad to autumn scenery regrets wanli years of wanderer for the guest, a lifetime of disease today alone on the gaotai.

Through all the hardships and bitterness, white hair has grown over the temples, full of decay and partial suspension of the cup of sorrow.

Poem title one "nine days to climb the mountain". There was a custom of climbing mountains on the ninth day of the ninth month of the ancient lunar calendar. From a detailed note to du shi. Made in the tang dynasty zong Dali two years (767) autumn double ninth festival.

Howling: refers to the shrill cry of an ape.

Early early shang dynasty is not the same as early shang dynasty. A small piece of land in water. The bird flew back: the bird was whirling in the strong wind. Return: whirl.

Falling wood: leaves falling in autumn. Xiao xiao: imitate the sound of falling vegetation.

Translation and notes


Translation

The screaming of the monkeys in the wind and the sky is very sad. There are birds hovering on the rivers and rivers.

The boundless trees floated down the deciduous leaves, and the Yangtze River, where the heads could not be seen, rushed.

Sadness and sorrow for the autumn scene, wandering all the year round, the disease is riddled with a high platform today.

After all the hardships and hatred, the white hair was full of shackles, and the heart was overwhelmed and the pouring wineglass was suspended.


Comment

The poem titled "Up on the 9th." On the 9th of the ancient lunar calendar, there was a custom of ascending. From "Du Shi's detailed notes." It was made in the Double Ninth Festival in the fall of the second year of the Tang Dynasty (767).

Xiaoxiao: The screaming of the screaming is fierce.

渚 (zhǔ): a small continent in the water; a small piece of land in the water. The bird flew back: the bird circling in the blast. Back: Roundabout.

Falling wood: refers to the leaves falling in the fall. Xiao Xiao: Simulating the sound of falling grass.


登高

风急天高猿啸哀,渚清沙白鸟飞回。

无边落木萧萧下,不尽长江滚滚来。

万里悲秋常作客,百年多病独登台。

艰难苦恨繁霜鬓,潦倒新停浊酒杯。


译文

风急天高猿猴啼叫显得十分悲哀,水清沙白的河洲上有鸟儿在盘旋。

无边无际的树木萧萧地飘下落叶,望不到头的长江水滚滚奔腾而来。  

悲对秋景感慨万里漂泊常年为客,一生当中疾病缠身今日独上高台。  

历尽了艰难苦恨白发长满了双鬓,衰颓满心偏又暂停了浇愁的酒杯。


注释

诗题一作《九日登高》。古代农历九月九日有登高习俗。选自《杜诗详注》。作于唐代宗大历二年(767)秋天的重阳节。

啸哀:指猿的叫声凄厉。

渚(zhǔ):水中的小洲;水中的小块陆地。鸟飞回:鸟在急风中飞舞盘旋。回:回旋。

落木:指秋天飘落的树叶。萧萧:模拟草木飘落的声音。

Those who study du poetry will certainly praise du fu's eight poems of qiu xing, but hu yinglin, an expert on du poetry, appraised "climbing the mountain" as "the first of the seven ancient and modern laws". His words were: "this chapter, in fifty-six words, is like the coral on the bottom of the sea. Tongzhang zhangfa, syntax, word method, before no one, after no one to learn.
